Learn How to Draw a Specific Body Part

Our student's work

Interested in painting but feeling overwhelmed by how much there is to learn?

Why not start by learning how to draw a specific body part, like an eye?

Even though it’s just one body part, drawing a realistic eye takes a lot of skill. From capturing the lighting in the pupil and adding the wrinkles to mastering brush techniques for eyelashes and eyebrows — after just a few lessons, you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve learned.  These skills, of course, can then be applied to your overall technique in painting.

Already know the basics but struggling with painting a specific body part?

Even if you have experience or are a professional, you may still find some body parts challenging to draw, whether it’s an eye, lips, nose, hands, or feet.

Our instructors can teach you the advanced skills needed to draw these parts step by step.

What is Chinese Painting?

Traditional Chinese painting, often referred to as “Guóhuà” (国画) or “Guófēng huà” (国风画), has a rich history dating back thousands of years. It’s characterized by its use of brush and ink on rice paper or silk and its focus on capturing the spirit or essence of the subject rather than merely its physical appearance.

Traditional Chinese painting is not just about capturing a likeness but about expressing the artist’s inner thoughts, emotions, and understanding of the world. It’s a highly expressive and spiritual art form that continues to inspire artists around the world.

  • Brushwork: The brush is the primary tool used, allowing for varied strokes and textures.
  • Ink Medium: Chinese painting primarily uses ink made from soot mixed with water.
  • Rice Paper or Silk: Traditional paintings are often done on rice paper or silk, providing unique absorption properties.
  • Natural Themes: Common subjects include landscapes, flowers, birds, and other elements of nature.
  • Philosophical Depth: Paintings often convey deeper meanings rooted in Taoist, Confucian, or Buddhist philosophies.
  • Harmony and Balance: Emphasis is placed on creating balance and harmony within the composition.
  • Seals and Calligraphy: Artists often include their seals and sometimes calligraphy, adding to the artwork’s significance.
  • Styles and Schools: Various styles and schools have developed over time, each with its own techniques and characteristics.
